    Hi all,

Just wondering if i can pick ur brains...

I have this very dirty 1938 crown that i want to sell, but im not sure whether to sell it the way it is or clean it first. Been reading through some old threads about cleaning the crown, they sure turn out lovely!

Any advice anyone can give me would be great.

I would. The only ones I don't clean are the really really nice ones, with minimal marks and some of the original lustre on em.

    Don't !
Original '38s sell at a major premium, even as ugly as it is . Clean it and no one will touch it, you'll only get spot silver value.

    No! It's a 1938, not a 1937 - never clean it.

Your 1938 Crown has low visual appeal - thus i dont think that it would sell for $120 ( rough going rate ) - if you clean it, you would increase the visual appeal, but the cleaning would be noticable and thus you still wouldnt be able to get the $120 going rate.

Nice verticals , no sign of the usual dings or teethmarks, when enlarged.

Never clean numi coins - it's a standing rule. It might 'look' shiny, but to numi investors it'll actually reduce the appeal.

The 'old worn dirty' look for numismatics is actually one of the first thing a potential investor will look for.

Does the Orb of the crown still have the visable cross?

I would not clean this (well i might but not if i was you).. and $120 is about the floor for a 1938 *(even with spot down to $30)

If you not a pro cleaner dont even consider it.. if your really bored go clean some 37's or some 27 florins or 66 50's - items that are ultra common in high grades.

nope, if you really really know how to clear correctly, then say Yes, or just keep it like this.

Yeh the cross is still very visible.
I must admit I do enjoy cleaning the 50cents the shiny look makes it look so much better.
Wow $120 that so much wasn't expecting that... better not clean this one then ;)

Works well for tattoo machines and (I've heard) fired brass, so I'd say it would do nicely for coins..

I Ultrasonic cleaned it when i got it, Auscu, cloudy amonia to losen the gunk 2 hrs. distilled water / sodium bicarb 3 goes x 3min in the cleaner, last in hot water and hey presto mega shiny coin. It looked to be tarnished with cooked egg or a sulfide like pyrite, Perhaps it was near a mineral collection?

a word of warning though if you use an ultrasonic cleaner, use the plastic basket to clean them, 3min in an ultrasonic cleaner with bicarb (heavy) without a basket or in contact with other coins will take the orb clean off one :)

The cleaners do an okay job but still dont get into the lettering as well as i would have liked. I have practiced on low grade pre 46 to get it better. i know every numi collector will go omg, but, at the end of the day, im talking about a grimy, dirty coin, not toning or natural wear and patina.

    kindest regards
    Phillip
