Just received a 2 oz 1999 Rabbit and upon taking it out of the case a purplish, black toning was noticed. I then pulled out the ruler and it was only 50 mm across compared to the real 53.3 mm across. I just registered for this forum and am curious if anyone has come across other fake lunar series silver coins?????
I am working on getting a scale to have access to all the time. What is XRF testing? and how can i post pictures to the forum? 50 mm instead of the listed 53.3 mm seems like a lot to me. Another aspect of this coin is the reeding. It is not reeded all the way around...just in four 1.5 centimeter segments around the edge of the coin and is relatively smooth inbetween. Shouldn't it be reeded straight up and down all the way around? I know I have too many questions but I have only been collecting for 8 months. Thanks for your help!!!
XRF machines will tell you what metal it is made out of up to 30 microns, what state are you in, The toning you are talking about sounds like all the PM coins tone from the 90's that way. Re photo's try photobucket ,you have to be a member for a week before you can use the house photo uploader
Just talked to a highly rated seller on ebay and he said his 2 oz rabbit for sale was reeded all the way around the coin. I will try to get some pictures up in the next couple of days to show you what I mean about the edge of the coin. I truly appreciate everyones help and input.
This may be how the coins are, I have noticed my 10oz Series 1 Dragon is like that as well (4 reeding sections, instead of all around). Compared to Series II. Slam
Thats a dragon 2 oz But I have the perth mint brochure and that is how they were made. I doubt your rabbit is fake!
If you email the Perth Mint about any of their old coins, they can usually dig up the tech specs and sometimes even scan and email you a copy of the old brochure, if you ask nicely
the mine tech: that is exactly how it is reeded. good deal. it was the first 2 oz that i have received and considering your dragon was the year after and reeded the same it makes me feel a lot better. also it is right at 50 mm. and considering it is an older coin and the toning may explain the lack of shine and dullness of the frosted background compared to my 1 oz series 1 coins. Talk about good news...i was pretty disapointed earlier today. thanks again for everyones help.

Looks the spitting image of mine - if yours is a fake then I've got multiple fakes!! malachii PS - mine aren't fake - they have been got from too many different sources (some even came directly from the Perth Mint).
