Son's birthday coming up - can't believe he's gonna be 29. Am putting together aussie coins - florin, sixpence, threepence etc. I have a 1982 Commonwealth Game coin I could give him for his birth year. Any other coin I should consider for 1982 of note?
If you're really really really really really rich you can buy a panda for him That $10 1982 coin is pretty nice, neat design.
The panda 1/10oz 1982 would be ~$350. The 1/4oz would be ~$600. They didn't have any Silver that year so those are your only options if you're very keen.
What about something non-silver like this: https://www.rarecoin.com.au/product/2956 1982 was a bad year for Perth Mint lol... see this: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Perth_Mint_Swindle
You mean of the era? mmm ... posssibly I found this: In contrast, many Royal Australian Mint decimal issues have very low mintages and are hence are quite rare. But values remain low because of low desirability. For example, only 85,142 ten dollar proof coins were minted in 1982 - fewer than one hundred thousand - in contrast to nearly 134 million 1982 circulation one cent pieces. The ten dollar proof was issued at $45 but is now readily available below this price. An uncirculated 1982 one cent coin, however, now costs $3.00, up 30,000 per cent on issue price. Why? Simply irrational desirability. More here:http://www.aussiecoins.com/Valuation.htm This site is aged at 18/8/2000.
Yeah you can go Knight / Stone printed in 79 through to 83. Especially $1 and $2 as these are no longer available so a little nostalgic. If you get a general prefix they can be had quite cheap. If you want an investment grade make sure you get either a first or last prefix.
Silverc. I was going to suggest a Panama $20 Balboa..Most of the ones minted by the FranklinMint USA..Most Balboas are are sterling silver and the ASW is just under 4oz. However the 1982 minted one is only .5 silver. They are a great looking coin..I have bought 2 single Balboas this year($105 and $130). The 1982 minted one should be around the $85 mark as the ASW is just under 2ozs. I was talking as usual to my mate at the silver shop and he was telling me about the $10 coin series..A customer who has known him for a long time was commenting about the days(must be around 2000 I think) that you just couldn't sell the $10 coins because the price of silver had dropped to $4 oz and no one wanted them at $5 or even less. They used to take a considerable amount over to the bank and get $10 fiat for them. I think that the amount in circulation would be a lot less than the official mintage numbers. I just keep staking NT and ACT ones when I can find them. The total mintage of both these $10 coins is less than 50k(less the ones melted down when they were banked..This is one type of coin that SS members could target and they would soon become rare. TAS and WA too have been hard to find at times. SA, NSW and Vic are fairly common..but they will always be worth $10 fiat. Regards Errol43
What a damn pity - melting down beautifully crafted silver. Has your shop got any 1982 $10 proofs atm?
lunar silver coin with his chinese zodiac? I know it's not 1982 but it is related to his birth year. Year of the dog I think.
That's the commonwealth game one isn't it. I have seen a few in their little plastic folder but I don't think I have ever spotted a proof one in a usual $10 proof box. I will check out the shop and also my own haul, if I can dig them up. Regards Errol43
ooh thanks a million Errol - still haven't got see your coin shop And yes it is the Commonwealth Games one
