Here is a few that i dug out to organise pictures,,i have not been around here for a while and alot of the original members here would know me,,but thought someone might appreciate some good numismatic items,,lovely condition but i am holding off with the obverses,,you might guess the first one,(would swap for 150 ounces of silver)the second will be tougher (thats worth about 55 ounces of silver)

Silverwink from China,i am thinking that your thinking a 1929Melbourne,(your wrong)but that would be worth more than 55 ounces of silver, and your way off with the 1870 sydney mint, you would get one of those for 35-40 ounces of silver at the moment

At least he had a go! I wouldn't have a clue. That's George the Fifth's head and something about the size and the direction he's facing sought of rings a bell but that's about it! Watching with interest.

I think I've fallen in love in sovereigns!

The first one without seeing the obverse makes it hard to establish a grade but lets say - 1860 ?
edit - I am working on it being a little lower grade ? otherwise a 1861

The second one at a guess is the 1931M ?

What the heck I'll have a go.
Grade extra fine year 1862 Sydney mint
Grade choice unc year 1919 Melborne mint
Really don't know much about grading but had a go.
Now tell me where I went wrong please

Your getting pretty close Silver addict,,gee the 1856 is a tough date and i have never had one let alone seen one in hand, the 1928m is a very rare date and in this condition would hit the $6000 mark or about 160 ounces of silver,,i would rather the 1928m cause it will allways be worth a hefty premium to bullion silver

Austacker,,you pretty close with the grade,i would go EF on the Sydney Mint, the obverse would garde as Good VF,,but you have not seen that yet,no-one handles coins upside down so they generally wear on the Obverse,,hope everyone is learning something from these posts,,the 1931M from memory had a different sized head,,this one does grade as UNC

Chillidog, your correct on the grading,,you have good eyes and can grade a coin or in this case can grade two coins, but the 1919M albeit a rare year and no-one knows that its rare until they try and buy one somewhere, it is not worth anything more that 40-45 ounces of silver, once again i think there is much more upside in a 1919m than 40 odd ounces of silver,,regards and thanks for your participation,,cats have had another big win

Aahh, should have told me you were a Cats fan, I would have gotten serious. My home town, never made the team there, but did change in the ruck with Polly when he was a playing coach elsewhere !

He he, well Polly is older than me, and I am also born and bred in Geelong. Used to play against Sam in school matches and knew him very well, that will give you some estimate.

Just a quick hijack of this interesting thread to give a quick public attaboy to aussiesilver.

I had a couple of coins and he gladly and freely helped me out with identification and things to look out for generally in the future.

    Much appreciated and many thanks!!

1926 key date for the Perth sovereign set. Probably harder to get at good grades than the 1899. I was going to guess 1926P as that's the only George the V I really know that has that kind of value. I have one of those first year sydney mints (a replica was issued with a book by the perth mint in 2005) - same size and dimensions (and gold content) as the original.

I'm actually collecting all of the current day Perth mint sovereigns - I have the 1999 Bi-centenial, 2005 issued with the book, 2009 and 2010 issues. Just need to get 2011 and I'm up to date. My ultimate goal is to collect the whole Perth set (1899 to 1931). Pretty easy to get most of them in aUnc - except the 1899 and that one above!

    Very nice coin!
