I found one on the 'bay for around $70.00 Aud ,shipped.
    The grading was F. 1800 Carolus 1111.

My obsevation (limited) indicates that higher grades are in the region of $100 to Some thousands ,depending on mintage.

It is more about the image for me..suggest you get a copy of Krause catalogue and study it well. :)
And check e Bay auctions for past sales.

    Or ask Thucy..he knows stuff!

Common name for them is 'Pillar Dollars."
VF will start around $100 & upwards depending on year, minter ect.

Ones with chop marks command higher prices, but be careful as some chop marks are fakes.
I have a wonderful collection of these in almost uncirculated condition, well worth having a few around your collection.

    Pirate money!

I am after some too but I want one of the more irregular cob coins from around the 1700s.

They seem to be a lot more expensive than the others and most seem to be in pretty poor condition.

You guys would have loved it but the display is decades gone now. In the mid-80's, a treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, found a sunken Spanish treasure galleon in the Atlantic off the Florida Keys. The ship was Nuestra Seora de Atocha and sunk by hurricane in 1622. It was the richest treasure find ever to that point and maybe to now. It was in court for years as every government this side of Sri Lanka laid claim to the treasure. Fisher, after 8 years in court, won possession after spending multi-millions on lawyers, but that's another story.

For a couple of years while the court case was going on, Fisher rented a nondescript looking house in Key West and set it up to display the treasure. The place looked to be over 100 years old but it must have been designed with hurricanes and tsunamis in mind because all around the inside perimeter of the house were large silver ingots (roughly the size of a 1000 oz bar) and they were stacked solid and about 5-6 high. There were open cases with reals and pieces of eight literally by the wheelbarrow load. Tons and tons of silver, no apparent security, just sitting out in the open. The gold they kept behind display cased. The emerald cross was 4 emeralds in gold at 1000's of karats on a pure gold rope chain that had to weigh 30 pounds.

I was doing film photography at the time (1986) but just can't find the pictures.

Nice one boyou and OMG OMG its a 1800 pillar! so if its cheaper without the cut marks what is the CHEAPEST price for one??? i mean the commenest date, the most worn :p i mean one where i can see some details around the VG to G mark on the commonest date....the only thing i have found is a pillar inside a watch but boyou i really like the look of both those coins....was the 5 pesetas inspired by the design?
