Ever since i saw a post about a spanish dollar here (can't remember which) i have been hooked on finding one but i can't find anything about it...i even heard a rumour that its 40-50 bucks...i really hope this rumours true p.s im looking to but yet just the price didn't find anything about it on the calculators either
By "spanish dollar"..do you mean something like this? The precursor to the dollar. 8 Reales Spanish silver .
I found one on the 'bay for around $70.00 Aud ,shipped. The grading was F. 1800 Carolus 1111. My obsevation (limited) indicates that higher grades are in the region of $100 to Some thousands ,depending on mintage. It is more about the image for me..suggest you get a copy of Krause catalogue and study it well. And check e Bay auctions for past sales. Or ask Thucy..he knows stuff!
Thucy is helpful and thanks for the price because buying this coin is second on my list before buying a 1/10 krug....so i sort have got an idea about what price this is if its VG it might be 50-40? idk btw i was wrong about the 50-40 mark oh well u can't get em all
Common name for them is 'Pillar Dollars." VF will start around $100 & upwards depending on year, minter ect. Ones with chop marks command higher prices, but be careful as some chop marks are fakes. I have a wonderful collection of these in almost uncirculated condition, well worth having a few around your collection.
Pirate money! I am after some too but I want one of the more irregular cob coins from around the 1700s. They seem to be a lot more expensive than the others and most seem to be in pretty poor condition.
Meh i don't mind about poor condition which is out of the norm for me if i can't get one in the long term i shall buy a copy until i get a genuine one
Yummy cobs..... Like this one! Ive seen some crackers in my time from the 1500's -1600's Some I have given a lot of thought before buying, but have always reneged. I don't like giving my wallet mouth to mouth resus Saying that! WOW this is a really nice piece: 140563817848
http://cgi.ebay.com/140563817848?ru...e-All-Categories&_fvi=1&_rdc=1#ht_2516wt_1139 $400 is also nice !!! Good condition for this coin - but i dont know much about them.
You guys would have loved it but the display is decades gone now. In the mid-80's, a treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, found a sunken Spanish treasure galleon in the Atlantic off the Florida Keys. The ship was Nuestra Seora de Atocha and sunk by hurricane in 1622. It was the richest treasure find ever to that point and maybe to now. It was in court for years as every government this side of Sri Lanka laid claim to the treasure. Fisher, after 8 years in court, won possession after spending multi-millions on lawyers, but that's another story. For a couple of years while the court case was going on, Fisher rented a nondescript looking house in Key West and set it up to display the treasure. The place looked to be over 100 years old but it must have been designed with hurricanes and tsunamis in mind because all around the inside perimeter of the house were large silver ingots (roughly the size of a 1000 oz bar) and they were stacked solid and about 5-6 high. There were open cases with reals and pieces of eight literally by the wheelbarrow load. Tons and tons of silver, no apparent security, just sitting out in the open. The gold they kept behind display cased. The emerald cross was 4 emeralds in gold at 1000's of karats on a pure gold rope chain that had to weigh 30 pounds. I was doing film photography at the time (1986) but just can't find the pictures.
Not the full display but apparantly you can buy some of that treasure hoard http://store.melfisher.com/magento/index.php/ Some of the treasure can be seen here:
5 pesetas of late 19th century or early 20th looks very similar to pillar dollar and costs loads less check it out, has a similar size too, swapped mine with Boyou last time i saw him
@ Jack CG ...you have started something here Argentum, yes indeed, I still have the 5 Pesetas. It sits with the 8 Reale nicely..hope you have enjoyed the swap (No apologies to the photo Nazis on SS for my humble pics ) Edit: Not aimed at Tom D (or anyone in particular) ,just sayin' don't mess with me on pics...
Nice one boyou and OMG OMG its a 1800 pillar! so if its cheaper without the cut marks what is the CHEAPEST price for one??? i mean the commenest date, the most worn i mean one where i can see some details around the VG to G mark on the commonest date....the only thing i have found is a pillar inside a watch but boyou i really like the look of both those coins....was the 5 pesetas inspired by the design?
yea i did enjoy the swap however the coin is not with m anymore, if you still have the other paraguayan kp it for next time maybe well swap again
