being a fake though given the price. ($500 for a 1 ounce oz gold eagle) If i do get a chance to purchase it, what should i look for to confirm it legitimate? are there a lot of known fake golden eagles? http://images.craigslist.org/3k63mf3o25Y45T05W0b6ad6bcf92b2b201482.jpg
Now, WHY would the seller be selling it for $500 ?! think about it ? Have you thought about it ? there is your answer.
If its selling at a price as low as $500 than you dont even have to test it. Maybe the coin in the photo is authentic, but SOMETHING must be wrong with that transaction. MUST. why would someone give you $1000 for free ?!
because they dont know any better? there reasoning was, my ex boyfriend paid $500 for it 15 years ago so im selling it for the same............lol
its definitely fake. I dont know if its cause im looking at mostly gold nowadays but that picture doesnt even look real. ud be mad to buy it.
theoretically possible. but a scam more likely. If it were a scam, it wouldnt be advertised as such. Every scam MUST rely on the greed of the victim. You see it for $500 /oz - of course you'd think its a great deal - its like in poker, if you are holding the nuts and you are on the river, you would put a SMALL bet, to make the other guy think, that he has the POT ODDS to call your last bet.
something wrong with the perceived thickness of the coin. An ASE is quite thick for a gold coin the edges are also more pronounced. It just doesnt look thick enough... if you have an ase, hold it up next to the picture and you'll see what I mean - something aint right from the pic alone - let alone the price. not worth the gamble imo.
well if you wanted to scam you could just as easily put $1200 as the asking price and not make it quite as ridicoulous a deal while still getting interest from people. it looks like someone deleted the post on craigslist, why would that happen??
Good way to get someone to rock up to an unknown location with $500 in their pocket. Craigslist is renowned for scams - too good to be true means it usually is. Don't let greed make you a victim.
definetely good advice, however i would only meet in a local place that has cameras . If they still decided to rob me, well that is how it goes sometime. An inherent risk from making trades/purchases on a site like craigslist.
goldpelican i know u stack gold eagles... are you with me that there is something not right about that pic?... looking at it a bit longer (got me intrigued lol) the shadow it should be casting around the coin should be a lot deeper... it just doesnt look thick enough. edit ase's to gold eagles! duh!
Yeah it's off - that's assuming it's even the coin in question. Something about it screams "plated". Gold eagles started in 1986.
Hmmm. 17 posts and 8 are implying that there is something wrong with the coin/price, and not to go for it, yet you are still interested? Go ahead and buy it then. But don't say you were not warned if it all goes pear shaped.
I thought Craigslist was only good for 'escort services' *wink wink* The old saying, if it's too good to be true...it probably is!
perhaps fortunately the listing was removed from craigslist (i wonder why that was?) and i didnt write down the phone number. So unless it gets put back up im not even going to have the option to see it. The coin definetely could likely be a fake, but I think people on this board also underestimate the capability of people to not do research on an item before selling it. There wouldn't have been much to lose going to see the coin in a public place, if i thought it looked fake I would just say sorry I'll have to pass. The only risk in doing this, is that I thought the coin was real when its not. But thats why ive been researching and asking the fine members of this board for advice on how to know if a gold coin is real or not.
