nope not at all if you look at the coin straight on its black so its definitely tarnished and it was from apmex so was probably sitting around in storage somewhere for a long time... only 13 coins were on the site when i paid for it now there all gone so i guess i got one of the only toned they had.

there used to be a craze or a fad in numi circles for toned coins a while ago.

i believe that there were a lot of intentionally toned coins with chemicals, smoke, heating, etc that hit the market.

there is a link somewhere on google on how to spot fake toning on coins.

toned coins are nice for older numi coins - i have a nicely toned 2 Corona coin.
but everything has its price and toning is purely numismatic.

Tarn-off (followed by some soapy water, and a hot rinse) will fix that just nicely.....

    Very nice colour there.
I share your taste in toned coins..have a few too.A couple( I suspect) have been artificially toned, but there are a few that just look awesome.

I believe there are a lot of "bag toned " Morgans and Peace dollars that are quite charming

Could you post that photo again? I would like to get a look at your experiment.
I have been doing a couple of my own .I put a couple of cupro nickel coins in a baggy with a hard boiled egg = high sulfur environment. Looks disgusting now ..about 3months on ,but they are showing signs of colour
Won't post a pic of that ..someone might lose their breakfast :)
Have also put a pure silver round into an old envelope which I believe has a high sulfur content and put it on the dashboard of my car. That was 6 months ago..should have a look and see the progress.

Back in Oct 2008 when i moved house and only owned 1 oz of silver ( my first purchase a bar
Pan American - the one with the hammer on it )

was in my wife's bag for a number of days and her mobile phone was there.

when i took it out, i noticed that the bar had colored ?! even tho it was sealed in the plastic
bag and isolated from sunshine and air.

i deduced it had to have colored due to the proximity to the mobile phone !?

i sold it to a friend of mine at work for spot, this guy doesnt work at the same place anymore
and i have lost contact, but id love to buy back that 1 oz bar.

havent toned any coins yet :)
