DSC03749.JPG DSC03748.JPG I was given South Africa long proof set 1967-however 1 rand (0.800 silver) doesn't look nice(some dump or water damage?). Is there any way to clean this coin? Any idea would be appreciated..

    I don't...
Is always better to ask someone with experience in this matter ,instead to pretend that we know everything...

I don't have to-just was curious if it's possible--I'll not lose or gain anything--maybe some knowledge for the future...

What would silver dip to to the proof finish?

I recommend swallowing it and allow the gentle digestive juices to give it a soft clean. Keep an eye out for it next morning!

Original finish and naturally toned coins are highly sought after even if not perfect, they bring more premium than a cleaned coin and sometimes much more.

Stackers like me couldnt care less about if a coin has been cleaned but to a high end collector it would matter.

If it's in original packaging it's best to be left that way from what I've been told.

I would try using a little acetone. The lady who comes from emop and cleans my apartment once a week told me that with the help of acetone you can clean a lot of things. I was very surprised when the coins were cleared of dust and other dirt in a matter of seconds. The main rule is not to rub too hard. Carefully take a cotton pad and wipe each coin.

Life imitating fiction. I’ve always joked about swallowing coins to clean them. Since Covid I have been gargling with colloidal silver solution. It is 20 parts in a million. Probably the same effect as swallowing a fiddy once a day!

I have tried the aluminium foil + salt + sodium Bicarbonate bath trick but it doesn't work on low purity silver such as 50%. It works ok on 92.5 but I have never tried it on 80%.

It is no-touch method for removing patina. It won't do much else in the way of cleaning.
