My best (and first) buy in 2006 was a 5 kg silver bar.when spot was $14.00 per ounce. I moved it on for a tidy profit last year to finance some more "interesting" purchases. When I look at those purchases I still see a bit of that ugly ABC silver lump looking back at me Aint silver devine?
Bought 70oz for $700 end of 2009 - all post shillings & florins. Remember seeing 100oz bars for $480 and $490 USD on Craiglist in the US in 2003... was toying with the idea of buying, but didn't. DOUBLE DOH!
cheapest I got it at was at $33.25/oz ( but I got ripped off by premiums, this was when spot was in the $28-29 range)
$5 per ounce when spot was about 4.50... damn that 50 cent premium!!! I was a teenager, my dad convinced me to buy 30 ounces at that price. 20 engelhard 1 ounce bars and a JM 10 ouncer. I wish I had spent my last dime that day!
A 1987 Falkland Islands King Penguin Silver Proof Crown for about $6.27 (.9410ASW) last August. There wasn't much bidding and I sniped it at the end. This coin is the last (4th) one pictured on the page below. It is a very beautiful coin. http://www.24carat.co.uk/frame.php?url=1991cookislandsendangeredwildlifecollection.html edited because link doesn't work correctly. Cheapest I got was 100 round 1966 50c at $6.43 (about .40c each under spot at the time) =) Oh actually I lie, my cheapest was from 7/11 service station about 3 weeks ago, the Indian cashier gave me a round 1966 50c for change instead of a 20c.
I was very fortunate the about 2 weeks ago. I went into an antique shop and walked out with 10 rounds at $4 a piece.
My most recept bargain within a week is from APMEX, paid on Monday for the "America The Beautiful" 5x5 oz coin set. The price was US$960 for 25 oz silver and that works out AU $35.75/oz
One well to do dealer who prided himself on his nuministic stock looked down on me when I brought all his rubbish silver back in the early 2000's.They included numerous proof kilo sets.I spent 2 hours using a back pack going backwards and forwards hauling weight on my back to and from the shop to my car. In hindsight it was the best exercise I have ever got.It was embarrassing! REDBACK
I'll throw in that I bought a 1kg 90's kooks for $500 when I was working at a goldbuyers kiosk. This was a 'buyback' figure for us workers. Gold buyers paid the person only a pitiful $250 each. This was when silver was $16.50 an oz US. If I recall correctly, in Australia, the cheapest around from dealers etc was bout $680 a pop. So I was chuffed with that purchase. In total I bought 4 kg at this price (the other 3 were for mum and dad).
i'm sure she nearly did it "accidentaly", my wife goes shopping and all the time its $200 for this or that and its all the things we "need"
