Hi folks, I'm brand new to this, bought a few 1 oz silver kookaburras off ebay. one of them, a 1990 shows some two small areas near the edges that has issues, can you have a look and see if you have an idea what it is? Not sure if it's damage to the surface or something on the coin. Not sure if I try and do something to it or just leave it.
It looks more like peeling or flaking to me, which of course it should not do. I have 1990 kookaburras with toning and it looks nothing like this. If you are near a coin shop with a XRF machine, I would take it in and get it tested. Does not look right to me. Edit: Here is Bullion Now talking about their machine.
I have the same issue with the kook in the 1990 family set. It has a slight peel just like the OP. It's tested and fine. Just an issue with the mint process I guess
Several of my 1990s kookaburra coins (1oz and 2oz) also have this type of problem. I am unsure of the reason.
There's an app called Bullion Test on Android which you can use to determine authenticity of your kooks by the "ding" they make. I don't know if kooks are included in the free version though.
