Just wanting to share this experience with others here. Might be the wrong section but I did purchase this fake sovereign from this section so still related. Anyways I received multiple sovereigns today and one of them appears to be fake. Luckily the seller was kind enough to give me a full refund.
More photos of the fake coin. The coins has the correct weight and diameter, however it measures slightly thicker than the coin specification despite appearing very worn on the queens side. (suppose to be under 1.52mm in thickness)
Get it checked out, may be a jewelry copy especially given the date /head mix up. If that is the case it may still be gold but just a lower purity or different mix. Xrf it
Pardon me for butting in but I noticed that the coin was not properly inside the area set aside to do the calculations. Would that make any difference to the readings? regards JOHNLGALT.
Hey guys, I deal with gold/silver on a daily basis and we've seen A LOT of replica/imitation sovereigns recently in Perth. We're seeing a lot of 18ct and 21ct sovereigns with original looking stamps. Just remain vigilant and make sure to get them XRF'd if you're unsure. Cheers Daniel
Had one passed off to me which was 3mm thick. Tested with acid & smoked the scratch stone mark. Assume it is brass. Got the money returned & sent it back, but seller had moved with no forwarding address. So obvious a fake, but a 20k or so would need closer inspection. Prefer the scratch check as it is very reliable.
I get all mine pmv tested and any that I am unsure of (eg if they don't look/fill right) I get xrf's as well I can usually spot them a mile away but I like the reassurance of having them tested however I am lucky to have access to both machines due to relationships I have established with people who own them. couldn't afford an xrf machine at $20k+
Some of the sovereigns we've seen are ridiculously well done, the 18ct ones are generally stamped awfully so they're very easy to tell apart. If anyone in Perth wants something XRF'd, happy to provide that service free of charge if you're unsure. Cheers Daniel
Hey mate, In the process of rebranding / refocusing our business, so will do in the immediate future. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers Daniel
Tried every position Anyways the seller will take it to get xrf for a definitive answer. Will update everyone then. Also got pm's asking for seller's name, Im not going to release it as seller is likely unaware of the issue with the coin and hes doing everything he can to fix the problem
