    Hi Folks.

Changes are coming to Silver Stackers. The forum has been running on essentially the same forum software version for close to 7 years, and is desperately in need of an overhaul to introduce "modern" forum features, and to combat the ceaseless waves of spammers that are able to penetrate the outdated spam protection on the current software platform.

To that end I've been working on and off on a new version of the site using Xenforo, and it's getting closer to launch. Entirely new software platform on a new host, with plenty of new features included. Mobile friendly too :)

There is one big hole in the migration path forward however - private messages.

The private messaging feature on this forum uses a third party add-on that I do not believe is supported by the original author, and regardless, is simply not supported by the migration utility that will be porting 12,000+ users and 630,000+ posts to the new platform. Messages on this forum are stored encrypted in the database, and there are over 600,000 of them - almost as many messages as forum posts. To that end, existing private messages will NOT be migrated onto the new site, and the new version of the forum will be starting with a clean slate for new private messages.

I am currently targeting 31st March 2017 as the cutover date - plenty of time to start printscreening or PDFing any private messages you wish to keep for posterity or trade purposes.

The actual migration will take several days - during this time the existing forum needs to be placed into read-only mode, and the migration scripts kicks off. After the migration is complete there is a bunch of work to be done with permissions for the various features of the forum, however we will have some down-time that can't be avoided.

It will be worth the wait however :)

Great to hear! Definitely worth the down time, hope you have a smooth transition. Only losing PM's is not a biggy in my book! Can't wait to see all the cool features and enhancements :)

    Great!

Will the new forum have a "poll" function?

I will be aiming to do so - however it may come a few days later. I'm still checking out the schema differences/similarities, but there is a trading feedback mechanism built into the new one. It separates feedback into buying feedback and selling feedback however - I'm not going to be manually sorting through thousands of feedback one by one to make a determination where it should go though, so there might be some challenges in doing it.

    Ummm, yeah ...

Not everyone got out alive !!

( some 80 positive feedbacks lost as a casualty of 'the war' )

Do you still keep our exiting login credentials ? (Ive seen other forums requesting users to recreate new login account if they want to keep active on the forum)...

But yes a new more modern look...bring it on I say :)

    Cheers, Andrew.

Will the old site be available for a period of time, or will it be changeover same day.
Assuming our current username and passwords will still work?

    Usernames/Password will be same.

The only thing that will be different is that you might lose PM's, so save the ones you need to keep if you have any :)

Print and keep in a folder.

Take screen shots. Create a folder called "Silver Stackers PMs" and pop them in that folder.

Just use Snipping Tool to take custom screen shots and save images in a folder on your HDD

I kinda like the 1990's feel, though anything that makes images easier to load is ok with me.
