Hey all, just found this forum and it looks like it will be the best place to help me out. I would like to start taking some cash and investing it in something tangible that i could save for my kids who are now very young. At first I bought some morgans and picked up some good ones 1878cc, 1879cc, 1901, 1883cc, 1885s, 1887s, 1890, 1899s. But now I am thinking maybe I should be investing in sliver instead and hang on to that... Would love to know your opinions on what the right move is as well as your thoughts on buying from JM Bullion etc....or if there are other sites that are better.. Really appreciate you giving the time to the "new guy"!
Welcome to the SilverStacker forum newguy! In my view, Morgan Dollars are fine investments so long as either: 1) they are very high grade and genuine or 2) they are not in uncirculated condition and you got them near spot silver price There's many potentially good ways to invest in coins and medals or precious metals....each with their own risk of course. And those risks are different for everyone based on a number of different factors including goals, location, age, finances, what are your storage capabilities and conditions, etc, etc, etc. JM Bullion is fine and there are many other reputable dealers, each with their own niche. One may have better prices on product X while the other dealer may have better prices on product Y. Never limit yourself when shopping around. You may also consider trading/purchasing from members or dealers thru this site. I always try to buy from dealers that offer free shipping and don't charge me sales tax.....those two expenses can offset any premiums you may be saving otherwise (or end up costing you more). .
I really appreciate your advice here. My main goal is to save for my kids who are now in grade school...i have been watching the silver prices over the last few weeks and besides for the morgan coins i bought, I haven't jumped in yet.. i do like jm billions starter packs....but just haven't pulled the trigger yet...
One of the things which I love about Morgans is that you can either collect them for their numismatic value or stack them for their bullion content. My own predilection is for high grade numismatic Morgans. The Morgans were minted at five mints during their heyday. I’m focused on collecting all five Morgan mint marks in high grade. I’m a British collector of Morgans who first got hooked on these beautiful American silver dollars because of their Wild West connection. The connection, of course, is much more visceral for American collectors because the Morgans are part of their American heritage personifying the ideals of liberty and freedom.
He didnt seem pleased with his Morgans and I was hoping hed want to trade for something. I cant get enough of the old stuff!
Everyone do have some sort of portfolio. Bullion - Move following Spot price. Numismatic ( proof / Slabs ) These consume lot of space. Vintage ( Older coins ) , These are Pot Luck. Some of this do takes lot of time.
I came across this, was wondering what people think? has it been cleaned? Looks pretty good for a 134 year old coin.
That looks really nice. I cant tell if it's been cleaned or just taken care of. It doesnt look worn at all.
I ended up buying it so I'll see when it arrives. In the photo is looks almost uncirculated, But the camera might be helping with that. I'll find out soon when it arrives
I like Morgans and have a few. Keep in mind, a Morgan dollar coin has about 0.771 ounces of silver. Consider what you pay for it on a per ounce basis and compare that to what you would pay per ounce for a coin or round if your primary objective is to accumulate tangible assets for your children. On a per ounce basis, Morgans aren't always the best deal. In addition, Morgans do not state the weight and purity of silver on them. In the end, buy what you like. If you like Morgans, go for it.
Mine were 15 to 19 bucks so totally worth it when they sell for 30-40 and rounds are maybe 26.. Most Morgans and Peace dollars have been melted down so theres limited supply unlike the mass produced rounds with unlimited supply and still made today. Even culls and holed Morgans sell for more than rounds do and they always will. Theres no opinion about it. Theres something about a 120 year old coin that always brings a premium. Every stacker knows what a silver dollar is and the history behind them. Same with most junk silver, mercury dimes, walking liberties, worth more than equal weight rounds and with much more premium.
I just checked apmex and they have Peace culls for $22.99 so I ordered 10 of them. I've read good reviews but Im curious of what they look like. I think the Peace dollars are much more sexy than the Morgans! My wife will be pissed i made another order but it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission. I just cant say no. Cant....stop....stackin.
