Was at a coin show recently and at a table there was a box of random, common date, miscellaneous, in pretty good condition (Fine-Extremely Fine I'd say) Morgan and Peace Dollars. Price was $18 for any Peace Dollar, and $23 for any Morgans. I didn't get any but that coin show is there once a month so I can always go back to the guy if it is a good deal. I currently don't own a peace or morgan dollar, so even if its not the greatest deal I still would be up to purchasing most likely. Should I have got some? Was it a decent deal? $18 - Peace Dollars & $23 - Morgan Dollars?
Some coin collectors stack Morgans for their bullion value like silver Eagles whilst others like myself collect them for their numismatic value and are prepared to pay more. High grade Morgans are always easy to distinguish from their bullion value counterparts because they are so bright white with sharp details. I think $23 is a reasonable deal for bullion value Morgans in good condition. Anything lower than $23 would be just faceless silver disks.
Yes, you’re right and it’s a legitimate criticism. One of the negatives of collecting Morgans is that the image never changes from year to year unlike silver Kookaburras and Pandas which is why I’m focused on just collecting the five different Morgan mint marks for variety.
Kookaburras , I do actually likes the "1990 , 1991" they have $5 denomination on them. They also do comes in Square , Round capsule. Toning Birds are good too if they toning at the right spot.
I'm just short of 100 peace and morgans finally and the last 3 were $23. I've never paid that much but I didnt hesitate and I'd pay more if I had to now. The last few years theyve been $13-$15 but not anymore! Silver dollars are probably my favorite of all the constitutional silver. That's what a buck should feel like in my mind.
One of the unusual things about me is that I’m a British collector of high grade Morgan dollars. They are not all that easy to get hold of in the UK unless one is prepared to have them shipped from the US with prohibitive customs charges. The market for Morgans is much smaller. Most Brits just stack silver and gold Eagles which are widely available over here. What generally gets Brits like myself hooked on Morgans is the chance of owning an actual old Wild West coin.
