Something like 1 oz gold dragons Year 2000 or other type of rarity. Can one expect 10% less from Spot or is it more like 20%-40%? Are there any rare Australian gold coins that command a very high premium especially lunars or low mintage ones?
1855-1866 1/2 AUS SOV will do nice premiums One available https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gold-18...721464?hash=item36612f43b8:g:FwcAAOSwNKRelSGH
I sold a 2000 1oz gold dragon recently for about 10% premium. Probably could have squeezed 15-20%, but I wanted a quick sale. Low mintage lunars, like 5oz S2 Ag mouse.... I sold one not too long ago for over $1000. 2oz AG S2 mouse around $450, maybe more. But if you want real drool-worthy premium - I have this..... a 1732 12,800 reis.
Oh cool, looks very nice. I might just try to find some nice coins outside of aus to diversify my collection.
It really depends on the market. Last year I had a major dealer in the US decline to buy 2012 1oz gold dragons at any price because they were "overstocked in that SKU" - they simply didn't want those particular coins. Ended up selling to a smaller dealer at the same show for a decent margin. The old adage is "the only thing rarer than a rare coin is a rare coin buyer". Low mintage 1/10oz gold lunars are about the only place I've had good success with numismatic returns on modern gold. They're also at a price point where it's still worth selling them on eBay and paying the auction fees. There's more collectors out there trying to assemble 1/10oz lunar gold sets than 1oz sets.
I had never even thought about that - collecting sets of 1 oz silver coins is affordable and fun as they are relatively cheap and it’s a hobby that most people can afford and spend a little on as each new design is released. 1oz gold is very expensive to be a hobby for most people. I always thought that the premium on 1/10 oz gold is too high but I guess that it’s the wrong way to think - the value of that premium is not lost if you sell or trade the coin down the track. I can see now that collecting sets of 1/10 oz gold could be attractive, you certainly wouldn’t need much space!
