I will add one insight to investing vs collecting, when it is time to sell for what ever the reason.

    Low premium bullion and coins
-> Many hundreds to thousands of ounces of silver can be sold at spot in a week or two on the forum
-> Tens of thousands ounces can be sold very close to spot to dealers for cash/cheque on the day (worst case)

Say you went into collecting route and amassed Hundeds of X coins that is selling at 10, 20, 50% or more above spot
-> to get this premium it means you need to sell on eBay or forums to realise the premium
-> NO dealers will give you maket premium (dealers dont buy at market price to sell at market price)
-> Time is your enemy -> list 100 X coins to be sold in a single lot = people will expect a discount, sell 1 to 5 at a time, you can extract more value but will take more time to sell many lots.

Literally Worst case senario, your investment is your collection
-> have many hundreds or thousands of premium coins, in lots of 1, 2, 5 or rolls but many different collections.
-> Some popluar ones will sell at "market" price
-> but you will end up dumping and forgoing premium in direct relations to time urgency.

What I do is, I invest in silver/gold and "collect" 1 or 2 coins of each variety, I like. But what I "collect" is a tiny portion compared to my investment.

Thanks so much for the insight! I am going to do pretty much that. But a bit mixed
    - get some 1kg bars for stacking at home and 'feeling the weight and value'
    - get only some cool coins for the fun of it (premium on a very nice 1oz coin is pretty much a pint... interesting way to look at it)
    - get some Perth Mint unallocated gold and silver
    - and developing an new hobby to set up a furnace and make cool 10oz bars out of ingots... :)

aaah. ok. thought of getting some of those and making nice bars out of it. Not sure if that is of any use though, given that then no one knows if it's actually 80% silver anymore... hm.. probably a brainfart of myself.

‘Don’t ever melt anything that is not 999.
You will lose basically 25% or more off the spot value

And limit your buyers to handful who likely won’t be interested

So would this burner work? Got a crucible from AJS, borax, thongs, fire stone, trying to do 5 to max 10oz at a time.

Or do I need oxy? Would be $300 instead of $60... :-/

That's the one. I say you make some 1oz bars first and see how you go

5 is just about doable...10z in open enviroment with a single MAPP will take enternity, unless you have enough firesbricks to trap the heat.

But as Slavaja says start with 1oz and get the feel of it.

yeah needed to work that out with the flame and settings etc. also, first learning, rather be patient and wait for the graphite mould to arrive. Using a cookie cutter is not the best idea. now I have to melt the silver back out of it :)
