Hi, So I have some 50% Florins that are looking pretty shabby (to be clear this I how I got them). See pic below. A couple questions: 1) Should I do anything about this? Will leaving them as is further damage the coins? 2)Will storing these with non damaged coins do anything to the non damaged coins? 3)What causes this? I assume this was caused by moisture? 4) What exactly can be done to "fix" them? Cheers!
This green stuff is verdigris from oxidation of the copper Soak them in olive oil, over time you’ll find the oil itself turns a bit greenish when the less stuck on verdigris dissolves into the oil. Take them out after a while (few weeks to a month) and pat down with a paper towel. Repeat is necessary This is a slow process but less harsh than scrubbing with bicarb soda paste And obviously do this only on junk silver and not on any coins with numismatic value
Whether its clean or dirty, its' value when everyone is excited about stacking silver is spot; when everyone is in a pessimistic mood, below spot! Not really worthwhile spending any time cleaning it!
Fair call, probably one missing answer that I'm looking for is of this will cause damage go coins in the same bag? I.e. will it cause the same reaction on coins which are currently in fairly good condition?
