Hi people, I've been buying silver and gold for the last three years and had been thinking that I had basically broken even, but looking at eBay as a guide, a lot of my coins are worth a lot more than previously thought. Going off that site it looks like I'm at a reasonable profit. Are these prices realistic? I'm guessing a lot of these ads stay up there for months waiting for buyers. Cheers, Krakked
Nope, at least for me I won't pay those ridiculous ebay prices. I can't understand why anyone does. When eBay is more expensive than a legitimate dealer why would someone take the risk? I think ebay prices are what the seller "feels" their bullion is worth not what it's actually worth, then add postage.
Here’s what I do: Take 5 eBay sold prices, average them and then subtract 6-10% eBay commission (active sellers pay less) and 3% for PayPal. That would give you a good estimate of value.
Don't forget to account for he 10% eBay fee and the 3% PayPal fee that are charged to the sellers. EBay prices generally reflect these fees. Edit: sorry, should've read all the comments first, I see shallow explorer has already covered that.
Only look at actual sales prices on ebay, not listing prices. Lots of people put up stuff just hoping some sucker who does not know the market prices will buy it for their listing price.
I'd be interested in people who have had experience selling on eBay as to whether they get buyers at these high prices.
Make sure you click on the sold item icon as circled in red. Remember eBay final sales fees including PayPal is 13.5% plus 0.30cent processing fee. Take the first 10oz bar that sold for $280 once you include postage take fees away it is costing you $38.10 in eBay and PayPal fees for a normal seller add the $8.55 for parcel post plus $2.95 for signature on delivery that's $49.60 in postage and fees leaving the final sales price of $230.40. For generic 10oz that isn't a good price for either buyer or seller.
I haven't used eBay for years - wow, that's a rip-off. I guess the only way to get a decent price is if the buyer is desperate for the particular bullion you are buying, or they are just ignorant. Are there other places online (apart from eBay and here) that people use to buy/ sell precious metals?
