    What lid?
It’s been all over agricultural news, I doubt these kind of news interest many non farming people. Re animal/plant dieases.
Very few urban people care about farming. Like in Australia case.... Varroa destructor mite for example, Australian Farmers were saying it will be Armageddon if it came to Australia....the end of farming bullshite and vegetable and fruit prices will sky rocket.

It’s in Australia now..... who cares, what prices difference.

Besides it’s just food, if something is uneconomical to farm and too expensive for consumers farmers will grow something else and we will eat something else.

Food is is abundant so it is fashionable these days, just look at truffles and lobsters it was stable food for prison and beggars less than 100 years ago.

Just like BlueFin tuna, when it becomes extinct we will catch something else for sushi.

Why does it matter who owns farming land, no one cares Brits owns more farmland in Australia than Tasmanian’s and Victorian’s combined and more than Chinese?

Varroa mite, potentially, could cause agricultural armageddon. It attacks bees. Bees pollinate crops and it's all part of the natural process.

In America there are some places they require trucks full of beehives to arrive and release the bees to pollinate food crops. Kind of like dial a bee swarm.

I'd imagine that has to increase production costs.

And what about the day, wether it be due to mites or pesticides, there are no bees left?

    Pollination by hand?

Australian farmers have been pointing to USA and Europe as example.
It has been in USA and Europe for decades.... Zero affect on food production and prices,
Unless the farmer had two heads and zero brain.

It’s purely a welfare farming tactic to get more subsidies.

The only thing now that stands between the Chinese Communist Party and it's military from taking Australia by force and turning it into their food bowl and mine is the US military and Donald Trump. The day that the Chinese military reaches a point where it can defeat the US military Australia is going to be forcibly colonised. The three most valuable and desirable prizes on the planet are Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. If China takes those they will be the most powerful empire in the history of humanity and will rule forever. Clean farmland and fishing grounds are worth fighting wars over in the eyes of governments, not to to mention nearly endless mineral resources.

Why would China invade Australia for farming land, there is so much land in Mangolia and Tibet?
Australia becoming a food bowl for Asia is a pipe dream of farming lobby propaganda.

Australia barely produce enough food to feed ten or twenty million people on top of our own population lol.

China won’t invade Australia but 500 million Chinese citizens would not hesitate to migrate to Australia. If you lived in China you’ll know why. ;)

China has 100+ million unmarried millennials and gen y living in cities having good job and disposable income - supplemented by their parents who pay for their car and apartment. Who is going to pay for their parent’s retirement and medical bills then? Supposedly their ever appreciating apartments. But with no grandkids, who is going to buy their apartments 20 years from now?

Then there is another half billion peasants living off small pieces of land on a subsistence level income. And a couple hundred million retiring boomers living off meagre pension that can’t even pay for their medical bills and there is no state healthcare.

Doesn’t take a genius to know he must migrate before the tshtf or compulsory military conscription happens if war really breaks out. Which parent is going to send their only child to war?

When your population is so big, you can never breakout of the middle income trap. The same case with India in the future.

Australia's the dryest continent.Poor soil.Only 14 percent is aridable,if there is water. The gold rush Chinese went back home, they found it so good. Most of it is a wasteland.Only good for sheep and goats..if there's water.

Not one country ever in history of humanity have ever failed because of health care cost or aging population.
    That is just myth

Singapore is already failing because of aging population. The Singapore government has imported 2 million foreigners in over 20 years. This is out of an indigenous population of 3 million and still can’t stem the falling productivity.

China is now where Singapore was 20 years ago. China has 1.5 billion people. Assume that China imports the entire Africa, it won’t be sufficient.

How do you know? Name one country that has become destitute and become subsidence farming country without electricity because of health care needs...

Is your perception of Singapore is going down the drain because you’re your not moving up?
My friends continually talk about Australia going down the drain, and I say to them.... wtf are you guys talking about, opportunities everywhere

Even in Venezuela there are plenty of people who support Maduro because they are better today than ten years ago.

A China migrant I talked to not long ago told me in a very straight forward manner that there are a lot more opportunities in China to make it rich but he still decided to move his family to Singapore because it's too expensive to live in China, i.e. housing and healthcare.

Opportunities are relative, depending on the stage of economic development. There will be more opportunites in China than Singapore and likewise, there will be more opportunities in Singapore than in Australia.

Since I'm in business, if given a choice whether to live anywhere, I will still choose Singapore because Singapore is very pro-business (capitalist) and is a socialist country at the same time. It is in between the Chinese and Australian system.

In every society there will always be people that are better than than the rest. Ray Dalios is the top 0.01% of Americans but he still complains a lot about the American system? A society that can self-critic will always be stronger than one in which free speech is stifled.

Correct, but we may see this happen yet re Japan.

    Extract from the below:

There are now more adult diapers sold than baby diapers in Japanese supermarkets.

Japan's demographic time bomb is getting more dire, and it's a bad omen for the country

    • Japan’s population is getting older.
    • While ageing populations are presenting economic difficulties in much of the developed world, the problem in Japan is dire: The country’s birth rate last year dropped to its lowest level since statistics were kept in 1899.
    • There are now more adult diapers sold than baby diapers in Japanese supermarkets.
    Japan’s population is shrinking fast.

The number of babies born in the country last year dropped to 946,060, and it’s the second year when new births remained below 1 million, Japan’s government said. It’s the lowest level since the country began counting in 1899.

At the same time, the number of deaths in the country – owing to the increasingly ageing population – hit a postwar high of 1.3 million. That means Japan’s population fell by a whopping 394,373 people in 2017.

In a demographic time bomb, fertility rates fall at the same time that longevity increases.

An ageing population like Japan’s poses numerous problems. The government will have to spend more on healthcare, and that, coupled with a shrinking workforce and tax base, is a recipe for economic stagnation. It also means, among other things, that there will not be enough young people to care for the elderly.

“An ageing population will mean higher costs for the government, a shortage of pension and social-security-type funds, a shortage of people to care for the very aged, slow economic growth, and a shortage of young workers,” Mary Brinton, a Harvard sociologist, told Business Insider last year.

Japan’s demographic time bomb has been a long time coming.

The country’s population grew rapidly throughout the 20th century, from 44 million in 1900 to 128 million in 2000, Quartz reports. But since then, fertility rates have fallen precipitously.

In the 1970s, Japanese women on average had 2.1 kids. Today that number is only 1.4 – far below the replacement rate, or the rate at which Japan would maintain its population.

The US is suffering from similar problems, but not quite to the same extent as Japan. The fertility rate in the US is estimated to be 1.76, an all-time low but still slightly higher than Japan’s.

Japan set a goal to increase the birth rate to 1.8 by 2025 and to maintain a population of about 100 million people by 2060. That will be easier said than done.

Of 127 million people, there are 67,824 people over the age of 100, the highest rate of centenarians of any country. Senior citizens over the age of 65 make up more than a quarter of the population.

In perhaps the biggest sign of the problem, adult diapers now outsell baby diapers in Japanese supermarkets.

Elderly people in Japan are getting arrested on purpose because they want to go to prison

    https://www.businessinsider.sg/japan-aging-prison-2018-3/?r=US&IR=T
    • Japan has the oldest population in the world.
    • Some senior citizens in Japan are intentionally committing petty crimes because they view life in jail as better than life outside, reports Bloomberg.
    • The Japanese government is struggling to deal with the aging inmate population.

Better than living on the streets. Besides the numbers are low, likely less than beggars in Sydney
