I know, their fees are just too high now... after deducting eBay and PayPal fees, cost of item, packaging etc there's nothing left. I wish they'd quit with all the promotions and discounts and just reduce their fees to something around 5% permanently. I didn't realise the $1 Sunday's were targeted, I thought it was available to everyone?
That would fair and I agree, a continuous reasonable fee would be much better for us. Chopping around changing prices and mail options confuses all the buyers. Yes it is targeted, I went back to a previous T&C and clicked on the link to see if I could activate it again. It came up saying something like "This promotion is by invitation only". Funny thing, after I did that I got a banner on the top saying "sell on Sundays for $1" and again I clicked on it and it was no go for me. You virtually got to check the promos everyday because they don't tell you when you got one. You got to look for it and activate it yourself.
Another reason why I don't sell on the feebay haha. Seems quite over the top with all the fees and what not
As a hobbyist, I quite like ebay and it promotions, on both buy and sell. 1. Free listings 2. Sunday promotion for unlimited $1 final fee listing (this seems like every Sunday for the last two years) 3. No final fee but limited to 5 or 10 items. Add that to frequent 5%, 10%, 20% off, it is my go to place to buy
For a hobby i agree it's still great place. I used to sell on eBay full time for a living in the early days. Very hard now to make a consistent profit. More sellers, more fees and competing always against new items and the big brand companies now. There doesn't seem to be anywhere else similar to sell though. I'm not a facebooker but I might have to try dipping my toe in the water over there.
For a business on ebay is 15% that much more than running a Bricks and Mortar? Bearing in mind that many items on ebay sell for the same or even slightly more than a bricks or mortar shop, and are willing to pay for postage. I was actually talking to a friend who closed a small business, she was selling via her retail shop and various online platforms. Now she is miserable working in an office. So I encouraged her to start again without a retail store, which I saw as a drain on resources and time.
Considered as a single factor the 15% ebay and paypal fees are not that bad. But I think it's the cumulative effect of all the expenses and associated problems with selling on ebay these days that makes it debatable whether it's actually worthwhile. Postage costs are a killer and although the buyer generally pays what the post office charges, the 15% fee on postage by ebay is often worn by the seller. There's also the cost of packaging materials. Then there's the time factor... photos to take and upload for each item, descriptions to write, items need to be weighed to calculate postage, then wrapped, packed, taped and labelled. Add in the intermittent server problems with ebay that can make listing, invoicing and answering email enquiries a miserable time-wasting experience. In the end, for small ticket items, if you sell something for $50, once you deduct the fees, expenses and original item cost, you might end up with $5-6 profit in your pocket for an hours work. Not much of a living. If you have multiples of the same item it gets easier because you can keep relisting with the same information and you can streamline the packaging process. But if selling a lot of different, individual items it can be very time consuming for little return. On the other hand, if you take your stuff to an auction house they take 20-25% commission but they do all the work. I've also had bricks and mortar shops. They're tough too. Big overheads that have to be paid whether you sell anything or not. But less time handling each item. IDK, maybe it's just time to get out of vintage/collectables/precious metals trading and start a dog washing business instead

Mate of mine asked me to shoot his wedding in a few weeks. I have not shot weddings in a couple of years, indeed even sold “those lenses”. Thanks for the heads up, I just saved a few hundred on buying a Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS II lens.
Glad to see the info was useful I bought myself a porcelain horse For anyone who missed out, ebay still has 3 different 5% promotions going at the moment all valid until the 31st March (why so many at once?? who knows???) Each one seems to be the same... minimum $30 purchase, and up to three transactions per account Codes are: PICK5 PAY5LESS PLUCK5
Alert: Click my ebay and then selling/sold and scroll to the bottom. Today I got awarded 3 items to sell with no insertion or final selling fees, cheers.
Wait... so i can buy, say an 1oz of gold and it takes 10% off listing price?? isn't that like, incredible? or is there a max
Unfortunately you can not buy coins with the discount. In the T&C's it says "Purchases of items listed in the following categories are excluded from this offer: Coins (11116)" Last year you could and I did it a couple of times but that's gone now. The maximum discount is $300 per transaction too. (They let you do 2)
