INK(highly saturated)Strong bluish Purple 11.60ct Portuguese cut, IF clarity Tanzanite, its in my collection for a re-cut to get rid of the window, when finished will be a very high quality and large gem, with the deepest of blue Purple colour, still have not decided on a cut for it, I have had it sitting around for 5 yrs or so. I should also mention NONE of my photographs are altered in any way apart from re sizing to be able to post on the forum. My camera is a Nikon D90 all colour ranges on the camera are set to neutral settings, there is absolutely no manipulation of colour, this is true for my laptop as well, the gems therefore look better to the eye than the camera can reproduce.I have found Tanzanite can be extremely difficult to photograph trying to capture the pleochrism (Yes Tanzanite can display 3 colours naturally in the one gem) I spent 3 hours yesterday fiddling with lighting and still could not get close, I just gave up. Some of the Tanzanite in my listing flash yellowish/greens/blues/purple, the rectangle cut designs i have used deliberately to display these qualities. Here are a few more pics of that gem and also a Amethyst I re cut.
Some very nice stones BenKenobi. WELL DONE on cutting them. Great job. Taking photos of Gems is really difficult (something I discovered myself). Almost impossible to capture the same colours than in real life.
having a camera you can adjust colour balance to neutral setting helps but also on your pc/laptop as well. But still with modern SLR cameras the internal software and its quality/ability of reproduction is where the most difference is made and generally is reflected in the cameras price. I have found that ambient sunlight reproduces the best as the eye sees it pics, but the light must be indirect generally speaking. Without going to the full extent of using a professional lighting stage specifically for gem photography its the best I can do. Focus is hard too due to facets/refraction, but my camera has 15 separate focus points within a target area which helps, but the lighting must be as I stated to get the best results. Really at the end of the day the factors of your chosen cut design also play a major part in how well your gem will present. Unfortunately camera image processors just are not the same as the human eye, the nuances in colour and refraction are often lost along with some of the gem species natural optical properties, eg the Amethyst has flashes of red and blue but these are not represented. I am not a professional photographer but having good equipment does help. I was happy to receive good feedback and happy customers who purchased the gems in the above posts, one also stated something along the lines of "much better to the eye than the photos" in a PM. I literally played for hours on end trying to get accurate photos, its just not as easy as point and shoot. Regards B.
I have not truly given consideration to selling... made it into the thread as matter of course from the pics that were taken from the smaller Tanzanite lot, another member enquired what it was, then I posted a few more pics. Glad you like it Howe, its a whopper of a gem and would look stunning in a pendant set with diamond.
Hi BenKenobi, just wondering where in Australia can you heat treat the Tanzanite or other gems for that matter?
