hi guys - i recently sold an item on ebay and now the item has missing while in transit.
It was sent via Aus post Platinum express.

Its currently under investigation from Oz post and they said that they'll be in touch within next 10 days.

So should the item not be found, does it mean that the seller will have to bear the cost of lost item?
or would Paypal insurance cover the loss?

Kindly advise if you have been in a similar situation and what to do next.

    thanks/

    Good Luck doing that.

I have been screwed over twice in the past 3 weeks and Aust Post is not interested in helping at all.

One was a tracked item that disappeared and the other was crushed in transit.

    Best of luck to you.

but doesn't Ebay/Paypal have Seller protection for that purpose?

why am i paying fees to them if they are not going to insure the item.

in this case, i am still waiting for Auspost for their reply but i dont think its going to be a positive outcome for me...

Answering from the US, but I'm sure ebay in AUS is the same...

The "seller protection" from ebay/paypal is NOT insurance. The protection is supposed to cover you when tracking shows that the package was delivered and the buyer claims it never showed up.

You are paying fees to ebay to gain access to their marketplace of buyers, not to cover shipments that get lost in the mail. Until something better comes along, we are stuck with it.

Its already been said, eBay will stick you with this one. Best thing you can do is be proactive, offer the customer a replacement or refund ASAP rather than waiting for a case to be lodged against you. Think about how you packed the item, was if obvious that it was precious metals? If so re-adjust your packing technique. Push Australia post for compensation and remember that how you describe the item can affect your chances of getting money out of them.
Are you comfortable with telling us what was lost?

eBay is trying their best to avoid buyer and seller direct contact, to secure their fees protection

if there is a channel open, deal direct with seller, chances are better to get the items and better for both parties

this is similar with the Russian & China gas direct deals, they by passed the USD, both are better off and the USD demand go down, US is trying to protect their own money
Russia & China are trying to avoid paying un-necessary fees

too much has been lost, and we will at all cost avoid buying from such avenues

I've been using the same post office to send silver/gold of recent and 90% of the times the items are insured.
so the guys at the post office are aware of what ive been sending.

This is the first time i didn't insure item as it was sold on ebay instead of SS and now the item has gone missing.

I'd contacted AusPost a week ago and its currently with them for investigation.

well tell Australia post that you want them to make a police report as the item was valuable then make one yourself, you should also push for them to commence an internal investigation into whoever has handled the package and at what point it has gone missing.
I have had a couple of items go missing to (one with $8k in it) and when I di this it magically appeared again.

    Serial, I like your thinking.

I have also had a really bad run with Aust Post recently.

I have an account and use eparcel to send.

You would think that they would look after their account customers,

    BUT YOU WOULD BE WRONG!!!!!!!

If you do not take out insurance they won't even try to find the parcel.

They really don't give a shit.

    Not even interested in investigating.

The problem is that there is no real alternative.

    Fastway is even worse.

Between Aust Post and ebay we are screwed.

Very unfortunate, hopefully it turns up.
When selling on ebay insure everything, unless you dont mind paying for lost items yourself.

But lets imagine if you sold it here on the forum.
You should also clearly ask and dicuss with the buyer, who is taking the risk on postage.

On a more productive note :
not sure from your post if there is any (I have satchels dropped in letter boxes and first tracking notice was delivered)
With tracking at least you/they can narrow the field down ie which depot had it last
ie scanned by your local PO, than regional depot (you can safely say unliky the LPO staff nicked it, so be polite to them and don be rude to them, so yuu can get sympathy/empathy for their help

Also isnt platium signature on delivery and what is the default insurance coverage?

which is why I asked if he has told them what it is, if he says it was jewellery supplies (decorative metal discs to be worn as pendants when mounted) he could get some money back

that's weird, i doesn't make sense on why won't AusPost insure the following items?
excludes bank notes, bullion and negotiable securities

If this is the case, when i'll inform them that sent is a jewellery and see what happens.

    cheers.
