I know that at one time the premiums on Platinum Eagles were pretty high. What are some good avenues on buying platinum coins?
If you're in the US, look out for some ebay deals on them. They get close to spot if you do the ebay magic tricks (cashback/rebates).
This is nearly impossible for spot for platinum. The premium on ebay is north of $300+. I'm actually happy if i can find them for $200 over.
Bought my first platinum today. Picked up a 2000 1/4 oz proof eagle. Paid 305$ seemed like a decent enough deal. I probably should have went low premium but the proof Eagles seemed to comand a high premium most places I look.
The Platinum i have had over the years has always (with 2 exceptions) been bought privately f2f. The premium is just to high to be buying from dealers or the bay. The exceptions were a couple on TM site over here, and one of those thought i was trying to get him to DROP the price as he had Palladium spot price on it. After a couple of back and forths i gave up trying to save him from missing out on hundreds of $$$ and bought it from him, paid him and he sent it.
Yea were i live there isn't any valid coin shops within a 2 hr ride. I've been scouring the forums but right now every seems to know that the Eagles are fetching a lot, and no one seems to be really selling there bars. I'm happy with it, there only going to get harder to find over time.
Anyone get in on the 2015 proof release today? Sold out in 5 minutes! Selling for 1500 on the bay already.
Wow...this is an extraordinary sell out even for the U.S. Mint..... http://www.coinnews.net/2015/12/03/us-mint-sales-2015-proof-platinum-eagle-sell-out/ .
Especially fast seeming how it was 1 per household. I tried getting two but I wasn't able to type my friends info in fast enough.
Selling for 2100$+ on eBay... http://m.ebay.com/itm/2015-W-1-Ounc...of-Coin-Coin-In-Hand-/331729064397?nav=SEARCH Crazy, I got one and it makes me think about selling it. I bet they will hit 2500.
This may have been the quickest sell-out in US Mint history....platinum spot is down so a good price for a Platinum Eagle, it's a proof coin, no 2015 bullion Platinum Eagle will be produced, low mintage, and first coin of series of 2 coins. I can't blame all those who ordered or tried to order. Too bad for those of us who didn't get to place an order before the 7 minute sell-out of this coin....good for those who made it! .
I didn't think it would happen but apparently I was wrong. People are in fact paying over USD $2,000 for the 2015 Platinum Eagles. Bidding still going on past USD $2,100. I do not know this seller nor am I affiliated with this seller (not a plug): http://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-W-One-...441259?hash=item41a16231ab:g:7q0AAOSwAKxWYH19 Shippeevt, you selling yours? .
I'm still on the shelf. But I probably will. 700$ profit is hard to beat. That and I collect mainly libertads anyhow....
That's a few tubes of libertads there....... Good luck and hopefully you will get a similar amount. That profit is insane.
Yes, you are not alone....you and like many thousands of other people who didn't know about this release or didn't get their order in within the few minutes before it sold out. I haven't even checked yet (and not even sure exactly where to check), but out of curiosity, does anyone know off hand how this year's mintage compares with previous year's mintage of the Platinum proof? .
Just Googled the mintages and yes, the 2015 is the lowest of any year for any version (BU or proof) in the 1 oz size: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Platinum_Eagle Interesting that the next lowest year was 2008....long before my precious metals awakening....what was the reason so few sold then? "Shortage of blanks" or some other claim? Another thought I had is that I believe that for almost every collector coin released, there's always customers who return the one's they receive back to the US Mint for one reason or another. Can we expect a lucky few to be able to purchase one of the returned Platinum Eagles? How likely is it that there will be some returns and restocked? .
Well....technically...the 2008 1/2 oz burnished platinum eagle is the lowest of all the available methods of manufacturing, whether it be the "burnished", "proof", or the "uncirculated". I think a well kept plan would be to find the 4 piece burnished set from 2008, and hold onto it for a couple of years...
