There's an interesting article about a company, Valaurum, that is manufacturing gold-infused currency notes.

The gold can be recovered just by heating a note to melt the polyester, leaving the gold behind.

I think this is a pretty nifty idea, but I think the price would have to be near spot for it to catch on. Currently the price of a 1/10oz note is 10 USD - Just over double spot. And of course forgeries might be a problem.

Yes I did, but the premium has to be the same as a 1oz coin otherwise it will just be a specalist product and can never be used as money.

Where can you get some of these? They sound cool even if just as a novelty.

yeah i was gonna pick up a couple for giggles but they only have one design and the price... oooofff.

if they were to get that down to say 20% over spot, like an average minted coin...

would any of you guys/gals buy?

Terribly hard to sell, but an interesting invention, nevertheless.

    Stack solid gold instead.

I bought a few sets last year, they had three different notes on sale at the time, though only one was shown on the website. Their customer service was very good.

The postage is the same for one single note as it is for at least 21 (the number I bought), it was about $24 last time, so not worth it for a single note.

The discount once you hit 10 notes is also worth considering, basically buy ten and get two free or get $2 off the price of each one

Last year I bought seven sets of three different notes and got them posted to Australia. I was able to sell them over in Australia for less than people could get them from the company in the states. In the end I offered free postage, the same unit cost as the parent company, sold six sets within a couple of hours and ended up with one set for myself. The savings from the bulk discount covered the cost of postage from the states and within Australia.

You could probably have charged more if you didn't mind holding on to them a bit longer but I just wanted a set for myself and wanted to share the cost of postage. Anyone who wants a single note should be put off by the % over spot and the postage but if you buy a decent number you should be able to make some money and keep one for yourself.

Shortly after that some of the dealers got them in, Maggie sold some, but then they put the unit cost up and took away the discount so it wasn't economical to get any more. It looks like they have dropped the price back to what it was and reinstated the discount.

They do custom runs if you ask them nicely but the order has to be for "several hundred" minimum.

I wouldn't mind one but with the AUD not doing so well I am holding off buying anything from abroad.

I expect there would be no GST if it was an actual currency, so what if "Hutt River" used these as their currency?
