Nice! I like how the JM logo is slightly different 10oz vs. 100 oz. I also notice your JM London bar also has that cool fleck effect some of or JM bars have.
To continue with Matthey Garrett, please find below a couple of MG bars purchased from a friendly dealer. The bars look quite old. It is hard to attribute the age/mintage - no information on AllEnglehard. I would suggest MG stamps preceded Matthey Garrett stamps and the most recent had both of them. i.e. their 100g bars. If anyone has information to share, feel free to do so. edit:Just noticed the purity marking is different on both bars, seems to be weird Manual labour?
A couple of ABC bars, one I have never seen before. it has the same serial and weight stamp as Engelhard bars and the other has the same 999+ SILVER all 3 must have come from the same moulds.
Looking at Matthey Garrett's relationship with JM 1948 - 1961 GARRETT DAVIDSON & MATTHEY PTY LTD 1961-1992 Matthey Garrett PTY LTD There is 1948 announcement, thought I would share. "Argus" July the 20th, 1948 'An Amalgamation of Johnson Matthey, Co Ltd London with MESSRS GARRETT & DAVIDSON PTY LTD of Sydney..." Another 1.002 MG bar, similar to one of the posted. Interestingly an MG AD from 1980 has silver bar with the stamp "Matthey Garrett", whereas the gold bar has 'MG' Given there was an official MG office in Auckland, I believe as early as from 1950s, this could be survived earlier versions of MG 1kg silver bars.
Here is my Johnson Matthey, I didn't find one with the same stamp on allengelhard.com so I've sent them a picture too. It looks like it was made for bank LEU, Zurich. A Swiss private bank that existed from 1755 to 2007. I hid most of the serial number. Click on it for bigger pic.
Awesome old JML bar, I've never seen one with that counterstamp on it. I think people are holding onto more of their bars waiting to see if the Trump win will translate into higher metals prices, my usual sources for old bars have run dry, at least for the moment.
Got these beauties today, Swiss Bank Corporation is not really rare, it serves more for size comparison. gussa is very hard to find. Extensive googling only found me one example and it didn't have the Volksbank counterstamp on it. Interesting size and 999,7 puritiy. Source:https://www.heidelberger-volksbank.de/
Both awesome kilo bars. I've only seen photos of the Ogussa bar of that type (older, more chunky and with the Volksbank counterstamp), never listings. The listings for the SBC kilo with those counterstamps were pretty reasonably priced back when silver was around $15/oz but back then they weren't really on my radar. Now that I want one like that (we do have the MP stamped one) they're always crazy expensive here LOL
Stacker! Check this Leviathan showed up on TradeMe. Now I know which bar I want, this thing makes me emotional 1 063oz AGR-Matthey Could anyone attribute mintage/age? Was it the kind supplied to LBMA? The listing and the pictures belong to TradeMe member 'mam111' http://www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-collectables/other/auction-1206522091.htm What ya think, rare?
It could be rare, but who really collects 1000+oz bars? I don't think its possible to sell something like that over spot, but I could be wrong. Where I am from, people will gladly give me old bars in exchange for a new, shiny ones of same weight and even add some money.
Yeah, my local bullion dealer had a bunch of second hand 1kg because they were cast and not minted, people thought they were "trading up" because it looked like the movies.
Latest vintage silver bar pickups, the Bear Paw Mining bars (Idaho) were made 70-100+ years ago, since these have the CWP logo in the lower lefthand corner they are considered 1st or 2nd generation bars. 7
Here is a shot of my rare Harringtons - 1981 100oz, 1981 50oz, 1oz (presumably from the 80's), and some coaster's 75th anniversary since 1906 (so 1981 also). Tested the coasters today with a PM verifier and passed on 90% pre 1900 US silver. I was born in 1981 so a little sentimental and beautiful looking stuff in my opinion. Enjoy
