I am not going to go back to the start with my kook collection but have decided to buy a single 1990 and 1991 just because they are $5 face value so slightly unique to the rest of them, now should I buy bullion in square caps, bullion in round caps or proofs? All my other kooks are from the millennia on and just bullion. you can pick up original proofs for about $10 more than a bullion in a round cap I dont mind paying the extra premium because they will be keepers so should i get the proofs or bullion? Thanks
Square caps were the original and the round were the remint from what I understand so square caps would be more desirable. I agree the proofs are bargains at the moment, seems like more people collect the bullion version.
Would there be any point getting the bullion version as well when Specimen and proof versions are almost the same price as bullion, if i wanted two of each wouldnt it be better to get 2 proofs or one proof and a specimen instead of 1 proof and 1 bullion? I dont really do semi numis and know nothing about coin collecting lol but Will the bullion be worth more than a proof in years to come?
So if you were faced with purchasing a coin and the proof with wallet and COA was the same price as the bullion coin you would recommend bullion over proof. A square capped kook is more collectable than a proof kook is this correct.
Sorry I only just found out that proofs are a design year ahead lol. Was there ever a proof of the original 1990 kook bullion design? Thanks
Dose this not seem a bit odd for collectors? If you were collecting 1 oz proof coins you would be forever a design missing over the bullion version.
It is slightly odd for collectors & for my 2 pence worth I'd buy the proofs very good value & low mintages with most well below 3000. Example below 2oz & 1oz proofs, all caught up by 1992 then all 1oz & 2oz are the same to 2005 when they finished.
Thanks that sort of cleared it up! I have the 90&91 1oz proofs, and i ended up buying a few other dates before I realized they were a design year ahead of the bullion version lol Looks like i will now have to get a 1990 specimen or bullion lol
Am I correct that the 1991 2oz kookaburra pictured above by moterbikez looks like the identical design to the 2015 kookaburra? Are there any other years where the design is reproduced? I am not that familiar with the different years as I have only recently got involved with them, owning a 2014 and 2015.
Here are my 1990, 1991 & 2015 Kooks, all uc coins. I like the background on the 1990 more than the 2015 but there is no question in my mind that the very early Kook coins exhibited an artistry and an attention to detail and settings that was lost with later versions. 1990 Kookaburra Silver Coin by TomD77, on Flickr 2015 Kookaburra by TomD77, on Flickr 1991 Kookaburra by TomD77, on Flickr
The 1990 Kookaburra does have a lovely finish. I guess that the 2015 is the same as the 1990 as it is closing the loop (1990-2015 as written on the 2015 coin). does that mean no more kooks next year? I really don't know much about the history so will have to look it up on the forum...might have to collect some of those older ones.
