This description goes for both silver and gold listed on APMEX: The 2015 Gold Maple Leafs feature a unique light diffracting pattern of radial lines, making the coins harder to duplicate and providing another measure of security." The problem I have, and the only reason I noticed enough to read and compare descriptions, is based on their stock photos, it's noticeably duller. The 'random year' photo is much shinier than the dull looking 2015, which is really disappointing. Hopefully it's not that big of a difference in person.
That change was actually introduced on the 2014 maples. Basically instead of smooth fields, they are grooved. I actually quite like the radial lines.
I guess it's all good then since I have only 2014 silver maples currently and I think they look pretty good lol
I'm not sure what you mean cos they look pretty good in this video:
They don't look quite so good in real life, I guess if you shine a light source at it while tilting it in your hand it looks decent enough but not so good in diffuse lighting. I quite like them, I grabbed a couple because I have a sub collection of minting techniques and security measures.
If you go off the stock photos presented on APMEX you'll see a noticeable difference. I'm not sure if that's *reflective* of reality or not. I don't have any maples other than 2014 so I can't compare.
I would get the newer maples (2013 onwards) as their security feature makes it easier to sell in future. Haven't come across any counterfeits yet unlike the krugs, older maples, AGEs, and even Perth Mint kangaroos and lunars!
I very much like the radial lines and it was a very good move in 2014 that the RCM introduced this exciting design feature....kudos for that. Now work on the milk spotting problem RCM. .
I've got one of each and the difference is only in the product photos. Coins are very difficult to photograph and a small change in the lighting from last year's coins just make the photos look different. Same coin, different year stamped on the back.
