Sometimes I receive old/foreign coins in my change. In the last few months I received as change; an American quarter (supposed to be 10c) , a Solomom islands 10c (again supposed to be a 10c piece) and just the other day this 2 shilling piece which was supposed to be a 20c piece. My kids got a round 50 a while back that i guess was supposed to be a 20c piece.

So I thought a post to show off unexpected change was in order.

What old/foreign coins have you received as change? And what denomination was it given to you as?

I normally get kiwi money if I get any foreign coins which promptly get passed on to unsuspecting shopkeepers

whoops...getting crappy old coins in my change,,, numismatics was the last area I was thinking of to check for a thread.

I didn't think they were really all that collectable.

To be honest I have actually never even looked in the numismatic coin area.

I guess I should broaden my horizons.

thanks for the heads up. I shall stick my post over there.

Recently a Jersey 20pence coin and some rather nice 50p coins, all circulated but still nice.

Am currently looking for 1983 mule 2p coins with the 'New Pence' reverse as they are quiet rare apparently. Funny thing is pre 1992 1p and 2p coins are now worth 50% more melt value over face value, just need to find me a football stadium full an all will be well!!

E2a: Iirc we used to use the UK 1 shilling and 2 shilling coins (Op's photo) as 5p an 10p coins years ago, mostly long gone from circulation now.

I always check dollar coins in case I find a mule. No luck yet. Have been able to score a wavy 50 though. :)
