Personally, I think The Perth Mint is setting the artists up for failure because: (a) Koalas are ludicrous looking animals to begin with (forget what you know about them and just try looking at one objectively for a minute or two), (b) Fur is an incredibly difficult subject to capture and re-create in any medium, whether it's photography, painting, sculpture or 100% CGI rendering, (c) Whatever render settings the Perth Mint is using to create the CGI images for the marketing material, they don't seem to be able to accurately capture the reality of the physical product. I think it is unfair to criticise the artist because even if Michelangelo designed one, it would still end up looking terrible in the official product images.
just my opinion, not nice design. PM need to come up with more attractive design. not looking good this year for koala
Panda and Koala = Similar animals.... Chinese panda the penultimate silver coin for excellence in design (FUR!!), perth mint koala = yukkk! RCM build in security features in their maples... milk spots
all I can say is OMG...thank god not collecting koalas...whats up with the design? not trying to be negative but PM should do better....????
Unfortunately I started stacking too late for kooks and koalas are the only series I have a full set of since their inception. I'll grab this abomination but might have to find something else.
The video Perth mint sent out looked pretty good. Pity the koala coin didn't. I still think the overseas market will snatch these up.
The 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 designs are all very attractive. From 2011 onwards the designs have deterearated year by year. This one continues the trend, the worst ever. Still I will grab 1 for the collection for the sake of completeness. This 2014 koala looks stoned. Maybe it will look better as a minted coin. The others all look slightly better in coin form.
If only they can make the fur like the China Pandas than it will resemble the actual pictures much close.
"Mike Guilfoyle" is the credited 'designer', a UK designer http://www.guilfoyledesign.com/Testimonials.aspx If I've searched for the correct Mike Guilfoyle it would beg the question 'What's wrong with giving Australian Artists a chance to display their work?" Samples of his work here: http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php?topic=20750.0 make up your own mind but I'm hardly impressed although I would like to see the original artwork the coin was based upon.
