Hi all, is there a definitive list of all the gold coins that mimic the gold composition as the gold sovereign? There's a few that I'm aware of, and was wondering if anyone has compiled such a list and attempted to collect them all? South Africa Republic Pond - Kruger Pond: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9791.html South Africa Pre-Union - Burgers Pond: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24472.html South Africa One Pound - KGVI: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces44913.html South Africa One Pound - QEII: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces89758.html South Africa Two Rand - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces22080.html Saudi Arabia Guinea - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11470.html Saudi Aramco Gold Disc - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces63088.html Cyprus 20 Pounds (various commemoratives) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces66282.html Cyprus 20 Euros - (various commemoraties) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces56927.html Cyprus Archbishop Marcarios (technically exonumia and not a coin) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia112637.html Greece 100 Euro (various commemoratives) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces40285.html India 15 Rupees - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15712.html Isle of Man Sovereign (and its many commemorative issues) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces35041.html Colombia 5 Pesos https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces90819.html New Zealand 10 Dollars (Lions Rugby Tour Commemorative) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces118444.html Oman 15 Saidi Rials - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces50251.html Poland 25 Gulden - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces29707.html Sri Lanka 5000 Rupee (Independence) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces62435.html Suriname 250 Guilders (various commemoratives) - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces91482.html Tonga 1 Hau - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces344389.html Turkmenistan 1000 Manat - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces100857.html And a notable mention is the Hong Kong $1000 gold coin, which is struck to the same specifications as a double sovereign (there are a few commemorative issues of this coin too, think old school Lunar Series commemoratives) E.g. Dragon 1976 - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces36167.html E.g. Hong Kong Handover 1997 - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24912.html Notable mention two is the German states 20 Mark gold, coming in at 0.2304oz AGW - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces21444.html I'm guessing there would be a lot more coins to add to this list, anyone know of any other coins that matches the gold sovereign in size, weight and gold content?
I just typed a few search parameters into Numista, weight, composition and diameter got a few hits that might be of some use https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...e=&u=&a=&dg=&m=6&f=&t=22&w=7.98&mt=&g=&se=&d=
Thanks for this, didn’t know you can search Numista like this, there were some interesting hits in there that seemed to match the gold sovereigns specs.
Added a few more to the list in the original post. lots of interesting pieces from the Numista search. Quite a few coins from the search results were excluded from the list, being a smidge under or over the sovereign's 0.2354oz AGW content. Eye opening how many coins are basically the same as the sovereign and a lot that are very similar in weight. Also added another notable exception is the German states 20 Mark gold. They were 0.2304oz AGW instead of the 0.2354. Can't remember where I read it, but vaguely remember seeing/reading something that there were proposals to accept either coin interchangeably due to their similarity in weights?
Perth Mint says Australian Gold Sovereigns are 22k gold, but does not state what the alloyed metals are: https://www.perthmint.com/shop/coll...-gold-sovereigns-of-the-perth-mint-1899-1931/ US Mint says Gold Eagles are also 22k gold and does state the "composition is 91.67% gold, 3% silver, balance copper" https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-medal-programs/american-eagle/gold-bullion The Eagles have "full" weights of gold so the 1/4 oz Eagle has 0.25 toz gold, but they are likely to be the same 22k composition.
