Can someone help me to identify my coin I have no idea about this coin, from the specific gravity (weight and dimension) its silver (>90%) It has "Japan Flag" mintmark and lettering "1000" and obviously i cant even read those japanese words Thanks
This commemorative medal(not coin) was produced in the 53rd year(1979) of the Showa era (1926–1989). Shōwa era, refers to the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of the Shōwa Emperor, Hirohito, from December 25, 1926 until his death on January 7, 1989.
Unusual to see the Chrysanthemum on an angle, never seen this on coins. Normally coins have the flower facing full on. Thanks to 'whay' for the info as unable to find anything on the medal. Sloppymeat, if you do find out anything more please post here.
It is .999 pure silver. That is what the 1000 means. It should be 999.6 or whatever, but it was legal to round up. The photo is too small to be sure, but to the left of the flag, I see the kanji meaning "pure silver." The flag and fineness in a diamond is a standard Japanese hallmark. Since 2012 they use 999 instead of 1000.
There are some 'hallmarks' on the bottom of the coin. Are these the ones referring to? Unable to increase size further because of lost definition, but looks line the diamond & flag referred to. Cheers Vezpit.
Yes, they're right There are some hallmark like japan flag, 1000 and looks like a ringbell hallmark Is there any description about something like the specific year, or any information from the kanji words
Here is a link to a date converter site I had bookmarked. Does japanese and about 10 other languages. Not sure if it will help, but give it a go. http://dateconverter.net/
The year is 1978 (Showa 53) The medal commemorates the emperor's 77th birthday. If you write 77 in an old form of Chinese/Japanese then it looks like the Chinese character for happiness. In the middle of the side with the date, the 4 characters are the equivalent of "Long live the emperor."
